Marisa Tomei has been one of the most under-rated actresses in Hollywood. May be it's better to say that she is the most under used actress in Hollywood. It's incredible that with very few good roles on offer she managed an Oscar award for herself. Tomei, an Italian by descent was born in Brooklyn. Marisa Tomei was attracted to Theater from a very young age and dropped out of university to become an actress. As in case of almost all the Hollywood actress, she started her career in the television starring in "As the World Turns" which was aired in CBS.

Tomei's strength is her capability to play both romantic and comedy roles with ease. She is at her best in portraying her roles in romantic comedies. Marisa Tomei's best performance till date has been in the 1992 comedy film "My Cousin Vinny". She played the role of Mona Lisa Vito to perfection grabbing an Oscar for Best supporting actress in the process. The next big role was the role of Caroline in "Untamed Heart". Even though the film didn't do that well, Tomei was noted for her performance. Tomei wanted to have a believable regional accent and chose a driver to be her dialect trainer.

Marisa Tomei is at her best playing romantic roles. Her usual vibrant nature combined with an exceptional aura of sensuality makes her the ideal choice to play those roles. The film was kind of crap but did well only on her performance. She received a second Oscar nomination for her role as Natalie Strout in the 2001 movie "In The Bedroom". Tomei's portrayal of a recently separated wife, who is into a relationship with a college student, was critically acclaimed. Another noted performance of Marisa was in the movie "Welcome to Sarajevo" where she played Nina, an American aid worker.
Marisa Tomei has to be content with playing supporting roles recently. Her role in the comedy "Wild Hogs" was a pretty brief one. She did well as a supporting actress in the 2002 comedy "The Guru". In the movie "What Women Want" she gave a very powerful but brief performance as Lola. Marisa Tomei has been recently involved in the anti-war campaign against war in Iraq. She is one rare example of a celebrity aware of her social responsibility.
