You don't always want to have to go to the cinema to see a movie in an excellent audio and video setup. Sometimes a home theater system is the best way to do this and the installation of that system need not be a very complex process. Quite a few people prefer to undertake their home theater installation themselves but most will call in some kind of professional service. In both cases there is plenty of information to be found online to help you with the best installation method. Your basic method should look something like this: planning, planning, planning, execution and testing.

Planning is the most important part of the installation process and, as such, will take up a large portion of this article. Whether you do it yourself or call a professional, figuring out the plasma or LCD screen placement is the first step you need to take. This includes where the home theater system will go, how the main viewing or seating arrangement will be placed around it and what kind of changes may need to be made to the rest of the room. Lighting is key in this respect, as it may involve putting up blinds or shades if you have a very sunny room, or adding backlighting or soft lighting around the screen area to avoid strain on the eyes.

This first stage of the process, planning, also involves figuring out the home theater setup around the power outlets in the room. You should have at least two power outlets that you can use for the various components of the theatre and use plenty of power strips to protect your equipment.

It is also an idea to plan out where you want the wires to go in order to be ‘hidden' - over bare floors or carpeting is not a very wise strategy. It is more advisable to lay them out against the baseboard of your walls. Use plastic strips or ties to keep them neatly organized and avoid the ‘snake's den' that often occurs after a week or two. Another good idea is to color code the wires using colored stickers and noting down the details on paper for later reference.

You also need to plan where and how the home theater system is actually going to be installed. Will you use a television trolley or wall brackets? Over the fireplace or on another wall? How high or low, and angled or straight on? Can the wires be hidden in the kind of installation you're doing? You also need to consider whether you have brick, stone, cement or dry walls and whether they can support the weight of a home theater system (including speakers if you're mounting them).

Finally, once you have thought through all the various logistical and aesthetic issues, you are ready to install. Your best bet is to call in a professional installer, ideally one recommended by a trusted friend or family member. The installer can then help you calibrate your audio and video for the best results. If, however, you want to undertake your home theater installation yourself then it would be a good idea to read up extensively on it and also call in someone you know who has already been through the process.
