He was born 2 November 1940 at the King George Hospital in India. His father Roger Oscar worked a steward and his mother was Dorothy Marie Webb. After he was born he was christened at St.Thomas Roman Catholic Church. The family shifted back to Britain in 1947.Due to the fact that India had received its independence. Their family after moving to Britain did not have enough finances and were not very wealthy. A different picture then what they had in India.
In India they were living a prosperous life with maids and servants to work for them but when they shifted everything changed. They did not have a home due to the current circumstances and they lived with some of their family members till the year 1951 when they were assigned a house at Cheshunt.This was where their son Harry Webb who later adopted the name Cliff Richard studied at Cheshunt Secondary School.
Harry began his career as a lead singer for a group that sang rock and roll they were named the Drifters but later on when they were about to perform commercially for the first time on a large scale the band adopted the name Cliff Richard and the Drifters. In the summer of 1958 Cliff left his band and struck a deal with EMI records. He remained with the label till the year 2004.On 24 July 1958 he dealt out his first single. Early in his career Richard was touted as being the British counterpart to the sensational Elvis Presley.
He enacted many of Presleys moves and belted out many singles such as Livin Lovin Doll and many more. His music was widely appreciated and always made a place for itself in the top ten countdowns. Furthermore Richard and his band the Shadows tried to conquer the United States but did not accomplish their goal. Furthermore in the 1960s they acted in different movies and their movies were a success in Britain and people thronged to watch their movie premieres.
During the years 1964 to 1975 Richards popularity decreased a little as new bands made a place for themselves amongst the masses such as The Beatles. But still Richard did not give up and kept giving hit singles that climbed up to the top ten. But eventually Chris made a comeback by changing his image and giving out many hit songs reaching new heights of success.
Cliff was the first rock star to be given the honor of being knighted. He was knighted on 25 October 1995.Furthermore he also tried his hand at business and was successful as he is the joint owner of Arora International Hotel which opened in 2004.
Cliff Richard has sold more then 250 million albums worldwide. Also he has had hit numbers throughout his career from 1950 to 2000s. He is known around the globe and is very successful as an artist and a businessman as well.
