The King of Rock n Roll will always be Elvis. Death of their idol surprised some fans but most of the people close to him knew this could happen at any moment since his divorce 4 years prior. As his last years unfolded, Elvis became more heavily dependent on barbiturates. Twice before his death, Elvis overdosed on barbiturates leaving him in a 3 day coma after one such event.

In November of 1973 Elvis was hospitalized do to the detrimental side effects of Demerol usage. His own personal physician, Dr. George C. Nichopoulos proclaimed that Elvis was near death at that time.

After this Elvis's health continued to deteriorate. His weight was described as ballooned by those close to him. On September 27, 1974, Elvis played a concert at the University of Maryland where his own band had trouble recognizing him because of his excessive weight. Elvis's guitarist John Wilkinson was quoted as saying "He was all gut. He was slurring," also "It's obvious he was drugged, that there was something terribly wrong with his body. It was so bad, the words to the songs were barely intelligible. We were in a state of shock."

In his final year Elvis and those around him knew of the problems he had, but did little about it. The performances that Elvis gave were no longer about how good he was on stage but an all out effort to just get him on stage and make him able to stand.

Elvis's last performance was on June 26, 1977 in Indianapolis. This was amazingly strong performance with great vocals. But within two months on august 16, 1977, Elvis was found unconscious on his bathroom floor by Ginger Alden. There were many failed attempts to revive Elvis. Death had come to the King of Rock n Roll.
