Karaoke Advice for the Utter Beginner

Dalsuke Inoue, the owner of a snack bar (in Kobe Japan) that offered live performances to its patrons, got stood-up one evening. Not wanting to fail or lose any of his customers, he decided to put on a few background tracks and enthused many of those present to sing along with the music. This would prove to be an ingenious move on his part as the practice became even more popular than the paid musicians ever were. And so "karaoke" was born and is now enjoyed by millions around the world.

Karaoke is a portmanteau of the Japanese word "karappo" meaning empty and "okesutura" meaning orchestra. It is a form of "interactive entertainment" in which amateur singers have recordings of music or music videos (sans lead vocals) paired with a microphone and public address system. A pop song is customary for this art form, with lyrics and moving cymbals, changing colors or music video images flowing on screen to aide the vocalist.

There are 4 types of karaoke systems in use today. The All-In-One System includes a CD player, monitor to read lyrics off of and speakers. The TV Monitor System offers the karaoke CD player and 1 or more speakers, leaving it up to you to provide a television for lyric viewing. The Built-In Microphone karaoke machine supplies a wealth of music, an easy-to-configure television hookup and the ability to effortlessly match it with a stereo system. The MP3 System is the smallest of the karaoke machines and uses digital downloads of both songs and lyrics instead of CDs.

Karaoke can be both fun and beneficial. Children can further their reading comprehension skills by watching the TV display. Adults can build up self-confidence by performing in front of a live audience. Family ties can be strengthened by taking part in an activity that is all-inclusive and encourages unity. It shouldn't matter if you cannot hold a tune as long as you enjoy yourself. Go on and visit a karaoke bar some night with some friends and give it a shot. Odds are that you will be glad you did.
