Why Get Singing Lessons?

If you already sing very well, then you may wonder whether or not it is a good idea for you to devote the time and money necessary to get singing lessons. Generally speaking, even the best singers can benefit from the guidance of an instructor or professional program. Many of today's biggest singing sensations not only started out with singing lessons, but continue to get coaching to better develop their voices.
nIt may be helpful to think in terms of sports. Even the most naturally gifted athlete needs to learn the rules of the game. In addition, athletes spend much more of their time practicing than they do in competition. They work with coaches and trainers to perfect their skills and to learn new ones. Singing lessons work in precisely the same fashion for those who want to enhance their singing abilities.
nLike the athlete's muscles, a singer's vocal cords need training to reach their full potential. Those who don't use the proper techniques can actually cause damage to their vocal cords, so singing lessons are especially important to avoid this outcome. Some singers actually develop nodules on their vocal cords as a result of improper technique.
nIt is important to note that not all vocal coaches are created equal. Individuals who wish to take singing lessons to improve their abilities need to do their homework when it comes to choosing a coach or a program. Be sure to contact others who have utilized the same instructor or look for feedback on a particular program. Unfortunately, those who do not know what they are doing can create just as much, if not more, damage to a singer's vocal cords as the untrained singer can.
nA final concern for those who choose not to get singing lessons is the likelihood of developing "bad" habits. These may not be terribly limiting if your kids are your biggest audience, but if you intend to audition for a local theatre, church choir, or singing contest, they can definitely hold you back. Again, an unqualified vocal coach can actually reinforce bad habits, so make sure you are utilizing a program that is tried and true.
nWhile there are many reasons to consider getting singing lessons, the biggest one has to do with personal desire. Whether you want to feel good about singing in the shower, or you plan to be the next big Broadway sensation, singing lessons can help you reach the level that is comfortable to you.
