Organization of the Premier League

Submitted by David Salt
Fri, 16 Oct 2009

The Premier League began operation in 1992 and over time has become more and more popular to those participating in sports betting. The league is comprised of twenty clubs currently, however previously it had twenty two clubs. For the current 2009-2010 season, the following clubs are members of Barclay's Premier League:

· Arsenal

· Aston Villa

· Birmingham City

· Blackburn Rovers

· Bolton Wanderers

· Burnley

· Chelsea

· Everton

· Fulham

· Hull City

· Liverpool

· Manchester City

· Manchester United

· Portsmouth

· Stoke City

· Sunderland

· Tottenham Hotspur

· West Ham United

· Wigan Athletic

· Wolverhampton Wanderers

During the season, each of these 20 teams complete against one another two times. Each team gets to have one of the two games at their home stadium in order to make things fair. Therefore, a total of 38 games are played during the regular season. There has been some discussion of adding another game to the season bringing this total up to 39. However, it has not moved beyond the discussion phase.

Membership in the Premier League fluctuates with its members changing from season to season. Some teams are promoted to the Premier League as others are relegated down to the Championship league, which is the higher level of the three lower football leagues. Automatically, the bottom three teams of the Premier League are relegated to the Championship League. In return, the top two finishing teams in the Championship league receive automatic promotion to the Premier League for the next season. The teams finishing in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places in the Championship league compete in playoff matches. The winner of these playoffs would be promoted to the Premier League.

The Coca Cola Championship is held at the conclusion of the football season. The participants in this championship are made up of various teams. They would include the three lowest finishing teams in the Premier League and the top two teams of the Championship League. The sixth participant would be the victor in a playoff held amongst the teams placing in 4th, 5th & 6th places in the Championship Team. The team winning the championship would be awarded the Football League Championship trophy. Last season (2008-2009), the winner of the trophy was the Wolverhampton Wanderers.
