If you've never handled a film SLR camera, a local camera shop is the best place to begin your shopping. The way a camera feels in your hands is more important than the brand name. When deciding what camera you will need, you first need to determine what kind of photography you will be doing.

Nikon has become one of the brands known in the world of Single Lens Reflex cameras. Although Nikon was one of the starters in the camera world, it established itself after World War II. It launched its first camera in 1948 and Nikon M was introduced in 1949 which was well accepted by the market. Nikon came up with its 35 mm in 1950 which was considered to be the best Nikon cameras available at that time.

Continuous innovation has made the Nikon F single lens reflex (SLR) with its current lens mount, called the Nikon F mount, in 1959 when it introduced the Nikon F Camera that has set the industry standard for SLR's and became the hot favorite of photo journalists and professional photographers at that time. In 1980, Nikon hit another milestone. It designed the Nikon F3 which was to be used by NASA astronauts in outer space expeditions. During the 1990s, Nikon continued to innovate by bringing out better and more advanced SLR cameras. It came up with the NIKONOS RS, the world's first underwater auto focus SLR camera in the year 1992. The company also joined hands with Fuji Films and introduced the E2/E2S digital still cameras in 1995. As far as digital cameras were concerned, Nikon entered the digital arena in the year 1997 with the launch of its first digital camera, the COOLPIX100.

Nikon is also considered to be one of the good makes as far as digital cameras are concerned. Over its 50 year history, Nikon has done a fascinating task of constantly innovating itself and bringing about new technologies in the market Every lens made by Nikon since then, over 400 in total. Many DSLRs allow you to use external flashes mounted on a tripod with wireless technology. SLRs range in size from 3 to 15 mega pixels (I have a 10 mega pixel). Some of the newest SLRs, such as the Nikon D80 and D700 make manual photography a breeze. Many SLRs offer extensive on-camera editing, and the ability to make every little decision for your camera, rather than the camera deciding everything for you

Some fisheye lenses have rear element that protrude into the camera body. Some bodies don't provide enough clearance for this – although the lens may physically fit, trying to take a picture may result in a broken mirror and damaged lens. Some of the older Non-AI lenses made prior to 1977 need to be modified (known as "AI-Modified"), since their aperture rings can interfere with a tab on the mount on some Nikon bodies, and trying to mount the lens can cause damage to the body.

In 1993 Nikon introduced the F3-AF, with two specialized lenses with in-lens motors and a teleconverter.

The details of the lens mount have changed over the years. The first changes were to allow improvements to metering, then to support autofocus, and more recently to provide contacts to allow camera-to-lens communication and power to support detailed shooting information, metering, autofocus and vibration reduction.
