Poker Origins

Submitted by David Salt
Wed, 14 Oct 2009

Poker is a popular game played by people for a long time. There is no clear proof about the origin of poker but it is believed that this game originated in the east and spread to Asia, Europe and all over US through the Mississippi route.

There are different versions of poker, the popular ones are Texas hold'em poker, Omaha hi, Omaha hi lo, seven card stud, seven card stud hi lo, Caribbean stud poker and Five card draw. All these games have varying rules and players need to be well aware about these rules to play the game of poker

The easiest version of poker is Texas Hold'em poker. This is the game for the beginners as the rules are simple and easy to follow. This is in fact the reason why this poker version is extremely popular among poker players. In this version of poker players are each dealt two cards about which only they know and another three cards which are placed face-up on the table and this is called flop. After a round of betting players are dealt with the fourth community card placed face-up on the table. A round of betting follows, after which, players get their final community card. This stage is called the river and then there is the final round of betting after which is showdown, where players show their cards. The player who holds the highest hand wins the game.

Bluffing and misleading your opponents is extremely important in poker. You can be a good poker player if you can keep a poker face - your face should not give away any clue about your hand. Your body language plays an important part in this game and it is extremely important not to give away any clue about your hand while playing poker. The game of poker involves strategies and planning and acting at the right time if you wish to win the pot. You should be able to read your opponents well and get a fair idea about their next action if you wish to win. Poker lovers do not have to limit their game with land based casinos as this game can be played at online casinos too.
