Premier League Season Overview

Submitted by David Salt
Mon, 19 Oct 2009

The Premier League has a relatively easy format in which the average football betting fan is able to follow. There are currently 20 teams in the league. There are some attempts to get the league to have only 18 teams, but currently the league has 20 teams which compete. Once interesting fact that the Premier league has is that the teams from season to season aren't always the same. This is a major change compared to most Football and other sports leagues around the world. At the end of the season, the three lowest teams in the league are relegated from the league and enter the Football league championship. In their place, the three best teams from the Football league are sent up to the Premier league so that they can compete in the top league. That interesting feature forces teams to meet a minimum level of play during the course of a season of the risk being out of the league.

The Premier league currently has a season which goes on from August through May. Each of the 20 teams will play the other twice over the course of the season. One of those games will be on the road while the other will be in their own stadium. This means that there is no competition advantage for any team since everyone will play all the teams twice. Winning games in the Premier league is very important for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that it gives the fans reason to hope for a successful season. The other reason is that in the Premier league, a team gets 3 point for a win. When there is a tie in a game, a team only gets one point. If a team loses a game, they don't get any points. While a tie in a game isn't all bad, winning games is very important in order to have a chance to be near the top of the league standings. If a team is tied in the standings with another team, then goal difference is the next way in which the teams are ranked.
