When you think of horse races you probably also think of sports bets. Horse racing is a popular sport for which wagers are placed. When participating in sports betting on horse races, you have some different options open to you. Horse race bets can be quite intricate and more than simply betting on one horse to win the race. One kind of sports bet used often in horse racing is known as the quinella.

When making a quinella wager you are in an essence selecting the two horses that you will believe will place first and second. However, it does not matter which place each of the two horses ends up getting. As long as your two picks finish first and second, you will win your quinella. For example, say you put your money down that horse #1 and horse #4 would be the top two horses finishing the race. You would win if horse #1 came in first and horse #4 came in second. Also, you would win if horse #4 come in first and horse #1 came in second.

The amount of a quinella wager can be small. At some places they may begin at 2 pounds and go as high as a person wishes to wager. When making a quinella wager, there are three different kinds you can make: straight quinella, quinella wheel and quinella box.

A straight quinella bet would require you to put a sum of money down on your two horse picks. If they finish in the top two slots, you would double your money. A quinella wheel is similar but with this bet you would select three horses that you believe will come in the top two slots. For instance, in the example illustrated above, you might put your money down on horses #1, #4 & #5. A quinella box is a bit different as you don't necessarily have to pick the top horse you believe will win the race. This is a popular quinella bet as it doesn't require much thought. They also allow for many different combinations. Theoretically you could choose to include all the horses but this would not earn you a profit.
