The game of roulette has many legends surrounding it that it can often make it difficult to ascertain which are not true and which are facts. Some things regarding the invention of the game still remain unclear. However, there are many known facts that one can piece together to learn about the history of this exciting casino game.

Many historians give credit for the invention of the game to Blaise Pascal, a French mathematician. During the 1600's, Pascal did extensive studies of the idea of perpetual motion. His experiments and dabbling in this area led him to create what many tout as the first Roulette table. The word, roulette, is in fact from the French. The word means small wheels in French. This is yet another clue pointing to its French origins.

Hundreds of years later, the first real modern roulette table was created. The designers were two French brothers named Louis and Francois Blanc. The roulette table created by the Blancs featured only one single zero. Their roulette wheel is still used today in European Roulette games. The invention was not used in France. At the time of its creation, gambling was illegal in France. Instead it was other countries or Europe and the United States that first used the new roulette table. In fact, in the United States, it became so popular that many dubbed roulette the "King" of all casino games. Roulette was often equated with wealth and usually was played only by the wealthier members of society.
The next major change in the game of roulette occurred many, many years later when the game was incorporated with internet technology. Online casinos began going online and offering the same games once could find in a land based casino. This increased the world's access to casino games. Roulette was one of these games that found its way to the internet and online casinos. The form of the game still looks very much like the earlier versions of the game. Many regard this as one of the many examples of how this game has survived the ages. No doubt, this game will be around for many more years!
