The Various Types of Horse Racing Bets for Beginners

Submitted by David Salt

Interested in betting on horse races? You should be, as it is a fun and exciting way to earn some extra cash. However, before you dive in to this new hobby, you should take the time to learn about the various ways you can bet on horses. Because yes, there are more ways to bet on horses than just choosing who you think is going to win.

That said, a win bet is the simplest and most common type of bet. This is, indeed, choosing the one horse that you think will win the race. If you choose the statistical favourite you will win less than if you choose an underdog that wins. Another popular type of bet is a place bet. This is where you bet on a horse that you believe will come in one of the first four places of the race. This increases your odds of winning, but you will win less. Place bets are available on races where there are five or more horses competing. There is also a combination win-place bet that is called an each way bet. In an each way bet, you win if your horse places or wins.

Now for the more high-stakes bets. A double bet is a place bet or a win bet where you bet on two different horses in two different races. If you win both bets, you get double your winnings. But if any part of the bet loses, you lose everything you put in. A treble bet follows the same principle except you're dealing with three horses, three races and triple money at stake.

A lay bet is a different kind of bet. This involves choosing which horses you think will lose. You often need to place lay bets through betting exchanges rather than directly, but good money can be made via lay betting. However, if the horse you choose to lose actually wins, you can lose a substantial amount of cash.

Those really are the basic types of bets involved in horse racing, and the ones you will need to know as a beginner. Good luck and see you at the races!
