Tightening Up the Family Budget - Review Your Current TV PackageSubmitted by Johney Maron Wed, 30 Dec 2009
TV. It's no longer a luxury, but a necessity. However, in today's economy when every dollar is important in the family budget, every option you've selected for your TV viewing may be wasting money. That's where sitting down and taking stock of exactly what everyone is watching is important. Do we need kid's channels? What about sports? Do we watch the premium movie channels enough to warrant keeping ones like the HBO, Cinemax, Showtime or other premium packages? And what about the HD channels? Are we taking advantage of the great quality that HD offers? These are important questions to sort through when it comes to budgeting your TV dollars. Let's face it, if you're not watching what you're paying for, then why pay for it?
In order to come up with a complete picture so an accurate budget can be drawn up is to know what you are using versus what is available. It may be possible to eliminate packages, or work within other packages to reduce your overall monthly expenditure, or to even keep the same level of spending, but get a better value for your dollar. When times were easy and money was plentiful, it was easy enough to say "Ok, give me all the packages" and drive on. But now that the economy has become such a challenge for so many people, careful analysis of what channels you're paying for will make for not only a less expensive bill, but for more effective TV programming. Take a look at the TV shows that actually get watched. Make a list of the programs and channels which are being used to provide you with the majority of your television programming usage. Are there a lot of family channel based programs? Or is the TV programming geared mostly towards football, baseball and other sports events? Perhaps most of the television being watched is on the premium movie channels for theater movies and premium programming. By taking the time to make a list of what the household is actually using their television for can easily trim down the size of the budget for entertainment. By carefully selecting the appropriate package or packages you are actually using, it is possible to save a considerable amount of money on your television expenditures. Most often, you don't have to really make any sacrifices to save money. Simply eliminating the wasted money spent on packages you don't use truly makes for more efficient TV programming for you. Even if a little sacrifice is required, for instance giving up a single favorite show in order to drop one complete package, in these difficult times, that sacrifice can well be worth the money saved. If you're going from having everything, to going to one channel package and removing all the movie packages, it is possible to more than halve your television bill. And with prices the way they are, any time you can save money, you can feel good. A dollar saved today is a victory in it's own right.
After a long week on the road, Johney Maron likes to return home and relax. When he isn't playing golf or out on his boat, he enjoys watching TV with his children.
