The sighting took place on January 6, 1969. Carter's sighting of the UFO began when the evening sky turned dark. The wind was still and Jimmy was standing outside the Lion's Club in Leary, Georgia. He was patiently waiting for a meeting to begin. From out of the blue, he and ten other eyewitnesses spotted a red and green orb pulsing in the western sky. Carter states, "it seemed to move towards us from a distance, stop, move partially away, return. Then depart. Bluish at first, then reddish, luminous, not solid." He said that sometimes, "it was as bright as the moon, and about as big as the moon. Maybe a bit smaller." He said that it began to move closer and close the them. When the object reached the treetops it hovered there for a while, then it disappeared shooting off into the distance. He said, "and none of us could imagine what it was, and I still don't know what it was." He believed the UFO was three hundred to one thousand yards away from him at it's closest. He said the total time that they observed the flying object was ten minutes, before the object disappeared in the distance. After the sighting he was so taken aback by it that he decided to record his sighting orally on his tape recorder.

During an interview he gave with the Atlanta Constitution, Carter relayed how incredibly moving the event was to him. He called what he had seen that night a "very remarkable sight."

Jimmy Carter's mother Lillian admitted that her son had been in awe at the UFO sighting. She said, "the UFO made huge impression on Jimmy. He told me about the sighting many times. He's always been a down-to-earth no-nonsense boy, and the sighting by him, as far as I am concerned, is as firm as money in the bank."

Carter has actually described the UFO sighting numerous times around the country since the day he witnessed it. In every single account, which includes the latest known telling of the story at Emory University, in the year 1997. Carter has always stood strong on his stance about the stunning nature of the UFO experience.

A few years after the sighting, at a Southern Governors Conference, he stated, "I don't laugh at people anymore when they say they've seen UFOs. I've seen one myself. It was the darndest thing I have ever seen. It was big, it was bright, it changed colors and it was about the size of the moon." In 1976, Jimmy Carter was quoted by the National Enquirer as promising, "If I become president, I'll make every piece of information this country has about UFO sightings available to the public and scientists. I am convinced that UFOs exist because I have seen one."

Truly what the Carter saw on that frigid clear night with 15 to 25 other witnesses from the Lions Club in 1969 must have left a great impression on him for him to come out into the public and readily admit to seeing a UFO. Carter spoke to many government workers about the sighting. One was Press Secretary Jody Powell. When Powell was questioned about Carter's sighting, Powell said, "I do remember Jimmy saying that he did, in fact, see a strange light or object at night in the sky which did not appear to be a star or planet or anything that he could explain. If that's your definition of an Unidentified Flying Object, then I suppose that is correct. I would venture to say he has probably seen stranger and more unexplainable things than that just during his time in government."

In conclusion, Jimmy Carter was just one of many US presidents that have said that they have personally witnessed seeing a UFO. Other presidents are Ronald Reagan (two sightings), President Eisenhower in 1952 working on a battleship saw a bluish type object and stood at the side of the ship watching it for ten minutes. Now imagine these people who have had UFO sightings being chastised for saying publicly what they saw. It is ridiculous to even hold the presumption that a US president would lie about seeing a UFO. This is a person who leads a country that is looked upon as a world power, so why if presidents have seen UFOs, would there still be unbelievers out there? For the sake of humanity, do some research and keep an open mind and by all means if you ever see a UFO, please report it to the Mutual UFO Network.
