Which flat screen fits to your pocket - LCD or Plasma?Submitted by Shalini Fri, 7 Nov 2008
Brainstorming is needed while planning to purchase a new device. And the same goes when you are planning to buy a flat screen television.
The consumers get confused between LCD and Plasma TV. Both are flat panel displays but still some distinguishing features make a vast difference among them and these features matters while you are confused – Which fits me most – LCD or Plasma? The article will list certain features that can make your shopping quite hassle free: The biggest difference lies in the picture quality. So the question arises – Which panel displays better picture quality? As of, both the displays render more or less the same picture quality but Plasma will enjoy the upper hand in this sense. Plasma TVs can render blacks more effectively than LCD TVs. They have higher viewing angles. Also, rendering blacks more accurately means better contrast and details in dark scenes whereas LCD lags in this term. There is some light leakage from between pixels which do not display impressive picture quality in dark. The other factor that can influence your purchase if you are looking for wider screens above than 50” is price. For screen wider than 50", Plasma is a better choice. Plasma screens are cheaper than LCD screens if you are planning for a larger screen. But if you are planning for smaller screens like 15” to 42”, then LCD is the right option. If you are looking for something slim and tasteful, than LCD is best choice and also LCDs are getting cheaper all the time. The next thing that matters is the full HD support. Many available types of Plasma are not full HD enabled and not completely future proof. The Plasma screens are susceptible to “burn in” and also they have glassy and reflective screens. Besides the price, there are many other key areas where LCD enjoys the lead. LCDs have a higher native resolution than Plasma of the same screen. This means that LCD has more pixels on a screen. Even LCD screens consume less power than Plasma screens. LCDs cut off energy consumption as much as to 30% as compared to Plasma. Even LCD screens enjoy the longer lifespan than Plasma screens. Next comes the life span. LCDs have the longer life. As compared to Plasmas, LCDs run for longer without getting dimmer whereas Plasmas get dimmer over a course of time. Next quality that matters is the picture quality in fast moving scenes. In fast moving scenes like movie or sports, pictures get blurred in LCDs. At crux, it can be concluded that at end it will be hard to materialize which is the best option and the best way to make out which way to go is to do side-by-side comparison. The major things that might be deal-breakers for you after a demo will be the unusually sharp and bright images of an LCD or the reflectivity and washed out images of Plasma under bright light.
