Women's World Cup Starts

Submitted by James07777
Thu, 6 Sep 2007

The FIFA Women's World Cup 2007 will be held in China from September 10th through September 30th. 16 nations will participate in the Women's World Cup finals. The defending Champion is Germany and they are a threat to win again this year along with the United States who won in 1991 and 1999. The U.S. is in the “Group of Death” along with North Korea and Sweden. All three teams are in the Top 5 in the world. US coach Greg Ryan has to get his team ready for the opener against North Korea on September 11th. “We start in Chengdu against North Korea, and I have the highest respect for them,” he said. “They’re very strong both physically and mentally.” World Cup betting fans know that if things go as expected and England finishes second in Group A and the U.S. finishes first in Group B, they will meet in the quarterfinals and that will not be easy for the United States. The teams met in January and played to a 1-1 draw. The U.S. would then probably have to take on Brazil and then Germany to win the title.

Despite the fact that Germany is the defending champ, Ryan thinks Sweden will be tough saying, “Sweden are one of the favorites in my opinion, and I believe Australia and Canada could spring a surprise.” If the United States can win their group they would avoid facing the winner of Group B which is expected to be Germany. The Germans have a much easier group with Japan, Argentina and England. The Germans won the Women’s World Cup for the first time in 2003, defeating Sweden 2-1.

In Group C, Norway is considered the favorite and is also a threat to win it all. Group D has the powerful Brazil team along with host China. Brazil is ranked #4 in the world. Denmark could also be dangerous in that group.

The 16-team tournament, which starts on Monday, is being held at five stadiums in China. They are in Shanghai, Wuhan, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Tianjin. The final is on September 30 in Shanghai.

World Cup betting odds have the United States as one of the favorites to win the title along with Germany, Brazil, Sweden, Norway and England. No team has ever successfully defended a Women's World Cup title.
