Common Credit Score Myths to Watch Out For!

Submitted by ccliaholmes@gmail.com

Knowing an applicant's credit score helps any lender decide whether a loan application should be approved or denied. It is basically a cluster of numbers that sum up the applicant's status in the world of finance. Because of its importance, there have been suggestions as to which factors contribute to the score, but some of these have proven to be nothing but mere myths.

To give a head start, many people don't understand what a credit score is, let alone its significance. A credit score is a number that primarily represents a person's creditworthiness. It depicts credit histories in particular, and this is often collated by credit bureaus that serve credit companies. Because of these collaborations, checking an individual's credit status is easier, and credit evaluations are done more quickly.

One of the most common fallacies about credit score is that it is affected by age and income of an individual. For the record, these factors, along with sex and length of employment, are considered when the credit bureaus evaluate your credit rating. Another myth is that your score will be hampered if you personally check your credit file - definitely not true. As a matter of fact, the government has implemented a new program that gives out a financial report once a year so as to clearly represent the financial status of an individual in terms of his credits standing. This is beneficial because the individual can understand what he can do to boost up his credit score and obtain the loan approval he needs.

Another misconception is that closing an old credit account can hoist your credit score. This is in fact disadvantageous to your financial standing. The length of your credit history matters so much that it constitutes about 15%. In other words, closing an old account would probably decrease your chances of providing proof that you have a good financial history.
