Smart Credit Card Balance Transfers

Submitted by urlreader

Finding one's balance in the fiscal world can be a bit tricky. There is too much focus on money to ignore it, yet focusing solely on it isn't exactly a healthy lifestyle. The word 'balance' has two main definitions, one being a state of equilibrium and the other referring to something that is remaining or left over. When it comes to balancing your finances and your monetary habits with the rest of your life, that is a personal choice. When it comes to handling the balance remaining on a credit card, that is a very different story. When it comes to keeping interest rates low and debt manageable, it's important to look at the options available.
If, when you look at the market, you notice how many other cards have lower interest rates than your current one, it would not be unreasonable to look into getting a new card with a better rate. If this is your situation, you are probably interested in a balance transfer. Credit cards that offer no fee balance transfers are a great way to shift your balance onto a card with better rates so as to improve your payment rate. When you are paying off a balance on a card, the last thing you really need is high interest rates driving the total of your purchase even higher.
What should you look for in a new card? Well, many of them come with offers such as a 0% balance transfer. Some cards offer you the chance to transfer a balance with no fees attached, while others charge a 3% fee for balance transfers. Credit cards that are charging for the transfer may then offer you an interest-free period on the newly transferred balance. Be sure to be clear whether this interest free-period applies only to transfered charges, or if it will also be applied to any new purchases made on the card. Such offers are usually good for periods of six months to one year.
When you transfer your balance to a new credit card you need to be mindful of the fact that no matter how amazing the deal you're getting may be, it is still a credit card, and you are no less at risk for getting yourself into debt if you treat this new card like you did the last one. When starting with a new card, be smart about it- make sure that you are in a position to pay off your existing debts before you start building up more, always pay as much as you can, rather than making the minimum payment, and don't be afraid to seek help from a professional if you find yourself in over your head.
