Starting Your Business With Government Grant Money

Submitted by Lara Sawyer

Have you always dreamed of running your own business, being your own boss, setting your own schedule? If so, then perhaps your dreams have been stifled by the lack of funding to get started. If you have a good business idea, then the government is willing to help out with government grants for new businesses.

Free Government Grant Money

For many years, the United States government has set aside money for various grants for individuals who are looking to start their own business. This government grant money is free money that does not have to be repaid to the government. There are different types of government grants for different purposes and business models. There are also specific government grants to help specific demographics of the population realize their dream of business ownership, such as government grants specifically for women, African Americans, disabled individuals, or those of certain ages.

There are government grants that are meant to target economically depressed areas of the country, as well as government grants that focus on starting businesses in areas where there is widespread joblessness. That said, if you have a business idea that the government feels can benefit your local community or add jobs to job force, there is a great chance that there is a government grant waiting out there for you to claim in order to get started.

Applying For Your Government Grant

The most effective government grant applications are carefully planned and are presented alongside a professional business plan. Professionalism is important throughout the entire government grant process, as the government sees the manner that you handle your grant application as indicative of how you will handle your business. Be sure to follow all requirements that are outlined in your government grant package, and do not omit any information that is requested. Proofread and go over your government grant application a couple of times before submission to notice any errors that might deflect from the presentation of your government grant application.

Budgeting For Your Government Grant

You may also be asked to submit a budget with your government grant application, which shows how you plan to use the money if it is granted to you. Be sure to use conservative estimates but to be sure to ask for enough to cover the costs you may have. Factor in such items as renting or leasing the premises that will house your business, purchasing or leasing delivery vans or other vehicles and equipment that will be required by your business, purchasing inventory, hiring staff, and other costs that you will have. It is also good to allow for a certain amount of money to pay utilities and miscellaneous expenses until your business is up and running.

Assistance Finding Your Government Grant

To find out what government grants are available for your specific needs, you can request a copy of the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance from the U.S. government, or you can view the entire catalog in PDF format on the website www.cfda.gov. Additionally, you can browse through the government grants that you might qualify at the government website www.grants.gov.
