Tips to Remember When Using Gas Rebates Credit Card

Submitted by creditrewards

Owning a car can bring great convenience but with the price of gas continuously increasing, many car owners need to find ways to cut back their costs. In response to the recent economic crisis, credit card issuers have introduced credit cards with gas rewards programs to attract new cardholders.

Surely, the promise of earning cash or rebates from your gas purchases sounds wonderful but before signing up for the first gas reward credit card offer you see, see to it that you are choosing the right one. Keep in mind that saving money with your gas reward card will depend on how smart you are with its usage.

Below are some practical tips on how car owners can get more rebates without getting yourself trapped in bad debt:

Sponsored or Generic? Should you get a sponsored gas reward card or a generic one? What's difference between these two gas reward credit cards?

A sponsored card is one that is affiliated with a specific gasoline company. Usually, the sponsoring gas company offers double points per dollar spent on the card. However, earning points may be limited only with purchases made from selected gas stations. If you want to go with a sponsored gas rebate credit card, be sure that you do refuel from participating stations and that these are accessible to you.

A generic gas reward credit card is one that is not affiliated with any gasoline company. Hence, the cardholder gets the chance to earn points regardless of where or which gas station the purchase has been made. If you travel a lot and refuel from varying stations, then a generic-type rewards credit card may be just what you need.

Avoid the APR. As with any type of reward credit card, the best way to benefit is to avoid paying the interest rate completely. This can be done by paying off your complete balance each month. Do not be content with just submitting the minimum due payment. Make it a point to zero in your balance before your due date.

Check the annual fee. Credit cards with reward programs usually come with high annual fee costs. Before signing up, consider well if the annual cost is worth it. If you must pay $100 on a yearly basis to keep your membership to the reward program active, are you still saving money? Will the maintenance fee offset the value of rewards you can earn each year?

Be aware of special conditions. Special conditions are always included in the Terms and Conditions. For instance, there could be a limit to the value of points you can earn in a month or a year. Some reward cards may also impose expiration dates or blackout dates on the points you have collected.

Sometimes, getting penalized is more than just paying additional charges. If you happen to delay with your payments, you may get disqualified from exchanging your points into cash or rewards. Truly, getting to know the restrictions imposed by your issuer is very important. Understand how the reward system works before submitting the application.
