What Exactly is a Cash Back Credit Card?

Submitted by jbiberdorf

It's always exciting to get some extra cash in your pocket, right? Who wouldn't want something extra? Did you know that you could get extra money by spending money? Enter the cash-back credit card. It's not a contest where you are competing with other people to get money. When you use a cash-back credit card, you are the one in control of your spending and you're in control of figuring out how much cash you get back from using your credit card.

First, you must understand how a cash-back credit card works. Every time you use your credit card at a store or restaurant, that establishment is paying the credit card company between 1% and 3% to process the payment. In the end, the credit card company makes money from you, as the consumer, and whatever merchant you use your card with. So, the credit card companies make money when you use your cash-back credit card and you do as well.

For any credit card that you want to sign up for, you must first do your research. Don't sign up for the first one that you hear about. You must investigate the interest rate, is it too high or too low for your needs. (If you are someone who pays their balance in full at the end of the month, then the interest rate shouldn't impact you that much.) However, the important thing to look at with a cash-back credit card is the rebate you'll be receiving. Shop around for the best deal in cash-back rewards. And once you do choose your cash-back credit card, make sure you don't charge more than you an pay at the end of the month once you get your statement in the mail.

When applying for a cash-back credit card, you would have to have good or excellent credit. If you have damaged credit, there are some cash-back cards that will cater to your specific needs. Nonetheless, if your credit is not in the best rating, you must look into all of the options for choosing a credit card like the rates, fees, or credit limit, because cash-back rewards may not be the best choice for you.

So now fast forward to the end of the year. You've now had your cash-back card for 1 year and you're ready to cash in. You must now read over the fine print of your credit card to find out the specific steps you need to take to redeem your cash. Some credit card companies will send you a check in the mail, or credit your account. Make sure you ask your credit card company specific questions about how they calculate your rebate. It could be based on a specific mathematical formula.

Don't be fooled by credit card companies just because you didn't read your paperwork. Take the time to read the fine print so that you can understand all it entails to own a cash-back credit card, or any credit card at all. In the fine print may be specific instructions for using your card, or repercussions for paying late. You don't want to find this information out when you're trying to cash-in at the end of the year.

Be a smart consumer and credit card user. You are responsible for your money.
