Becoming Debt Free

Submitted by Marjorie Salada
Thu, 17 Aug 2006

The first step towards getting to debt freedom is deciding you want it bad enough to do what it takes to get there and that is going to involve changing your thinking about money. If you have credit card debt for things that are not an emergency, it is time to start evaluating why you spend money.

Starting asking yourself how you feel when you spend impulsively and what else is going on in your life at the time. Take note of what the consequences are when you spend impulsively and find an alternative to spending money when you are faced with the same situations and feelings. These statements are very simply put, but this is not going to be an easy task.

If your debt problem is serious, you would probably benefit most from professional help. You can get this help for free; after all, you are not trying to add to your debt problem. Debtors anonymous is a good program. They will help you to understand the things that influence your spending habits and you will also have the benefit of the organization’s other members that have been where you are.

Debt counseling agencies are also an excellent source of outside help. They will help you set up a budget and a debt management plan. This type of debt relief can be gotten for free or at very low cost. Debt counseling may be necessary just to get you started. If you are overwhelmed with debt, you may have a hard time trying to decide where to begin. Debt counseling organizations can show the way and walk you through the process.

You will not be allowed to have open charge accounts while enrolled in a debt management plan. For some people this is a good thing, because they need that extra control when it comes to their compulsive spending.

Set some goals for yourself. Have a plan for what you wish to accomplish. As you start meeting these goals you will not only see your outlook on your debt change, but you will feel better about your life in general.
