Early Saving for the Holidays

Submitted by cbelden

Now that summer is coming to an end, you may have begun to see displays for Halloween and Thanksgiving in local retail stores. That means that holiday season is rapidly approaching, and for some, it comes a feeling of financial dread. This year, more and more consumers are struggling to watch their budgets, and the holiday buying blitz threatens to over-stress shoppers and over-tax credit cards.

The good news is that the holidays don't have to be as stressful as they seem. In fact, with enough early preparation, it's possible to buy gifts for everyone on your list while still staying within your spending limit. The keys are to make a list, check it twice, and above all, stay realistic. In this article, we'll make some suggestions for your early holiday savings technique.

Make A List

Begin your holiday endeavors by creating a list of everyone to whom you wish to give gifts. Keep in mind while you do so that the purpose of the list is simply to give you a plan for which you will budget shopping funds. While some savers may wish to include every endeared family member they can remember to write down, it's important to remain realistic.

If you have not exchanged gifts with your great aunt or uncle in years past, this year is not the time to start. And while it's normal to feel guilty about leaving people off your list, remember: you're working to craft a budget. Spreading the budget too thin will lead to less expensive gifts for immediate family and close friends, which could lead to impulse buys. This is the year to prioritize your funds.

Brainstorm Gift Ideas

While this is not the season to buy every person on your list their dream gifts, you don't have to settle for gift cards either. Brainstorm what you think he or she would like to receive, while using your best financial judgment. Consider his or her hobbies, tastes in books, music, movies and other inexpensive one-time purchases.

If any of your ideas are some that can be purchased off-season online or in a store, go ahead and compare prices. The further away from the holidays your purchases are made, the more likely you are to benefit from end-of-summer sales and off-season shipping prices. But don't buy anything yet; simply keep those prices on hand for when you craft your holiday gift-giving budget.

Craft A Budget

You should already have a carefully crafted monthly budget that you rely on over the course of each pay period in order to responsibly track your earnings. However, if you don't have one for reference, now is a great time to start. Gather your bills and receipts and paint yourself a financial portrait, showing where your funds are obligated, where they can be saved, and where they can be spent on items like meals, gas, recreation, and in this case, holiday gifts.

Taking into account your financial obligations and monthly spending funds, estimate a reasonable amount to accumulate by time to purchase holiday gifts. Then, begin setting aside a portion of your monthly spending money for a holiday gift-giving fund. Depending on how early you start, you may be able to increase (or decrease) the amount you contribute each month.

Trim Your Wish List

Now that you have an idea of a realistic holiday savings plan, take a second look at your shopping list. Start comparing prices for all your chosen gift ideas and see if they will fit within your estimated savings goal. Then, trim off or rethink those gifts that are too expensive for this year's spending plan.

By sticking to your budget and shopping early, it's possible to give thoughtful gifts to everyone on your list without breaking your budget. Check ‘n Go, a leader in the payday lending industry, offers hundreds of tips and suggestions for savvy shopping, smart budgeting, and inexpensive ways to make the holiday season stress-free.
