Home Owners And Flood Insurance PolicySubmitted by VSang Sat, 26 Jan 2008
It was not too long ago that people who lived in flood prone areas had little or no options when it came to home flood insurance. All of this changed when congress created the National Flood Insurance Program in 1968. This allowed home owners to protect their homes and families from potentially damaging floods that might occur.
You will of course have choices in the type of coverage you want, you can choose the level of protection you want for your home. A choice that offers lower home flood insurance premiums is available. This is called a Preferred Risk Policy. It is lower cost option for those who live in low to moderate flood risk areas. This type of policy is available for both residential and business coverage. Flooding is not covered in your basic home owners insurance policy. This is a coverage that you will need to have added to your policy. Even if you do not live in a flood zone, these events do happen, naturally and sometimes are not due to nature, and and you should invest in at least the minimum coverage to protect your home. It is important that you read and understand your policy before you purchase it to avoid unforeseen complications should the situation arise. Be aware that if you are purchasing your home owners flood insurance for the first time, there is a standard waiting period before your policy beomes active. The waiting period is usually thirty days, however, if you are adding this coverage to an existing policy the waiting period is often waived. It depends on the terms and conditions of your policy and insurance company. When the National Flood Insurance Program was introduced, insurance companies made special provisions to its policyholders. Although it is a part of your homeowners insurance, it is considered to be a special policy, and not part of your standard homeowners insurance policy. The biggest benefit to this type of policy is that it also covers what is termed “Acts of God”, which means that not only is your home insured for flood damage, it is covered for a number of different natural disasters. It is important that you discuss which events are covered with your insurance provider. Of course ou can expect to incur an increase in your home insurance premiums. Think of it as an investment not only in your home but toward your peace of mind. A quick search for home flood insurance online will allow for easy comparison of quotes, coverages and costs. In the event flooding occurs by any means you will be covered and able to recover from any damages, which in some cases involving water can be severe and costly, when you have wisely acquired home owners flood insurance.
