How Does an Internet Business Compare to a Conventional, Physical Business?Submitted by Pat Patrickson Thu, 16 Jul 2009
As the economy toughens, more and more people are trying to start businesses on the internet. it seems very easy, and the initial expense is a lot less. Unfortunately, many people fail miserably, simply because they are not able to see the similarities between running an internet business and a physical business.
When starting your business in the town center, you need some knowledge of business principles, dealing with clients, and money management. You can learn these skills by working for someone else, or through study. On the internet, the dynamics of business are different, but the basic principles still apply. Unfortunately, on the internet there are many people selling useless information, promising you that it will be easy, while it's not. Unless you are willing to lay out a substantial amount on outsourcing fees, you may have to learn quite a bit. Just like in the physical world, you have to set up shop, help your customers to find you, and provide them with value in return for their money. In a physical business, you can locate yourself in a busy shopping center to be able to profit from passing trade. ON the internet, you can advertise on a busy website, creating an "instant entrance" to your business premises (your website). Just like the option of locating inside a busy shopping center, this form of advertising costs more than you may want to spend. However, in both cases, the expense is justified by the profitability. It takes at least a year to establish a conventional business. Unfortunately, everybody expects the internet to be faster. This is apparent in the short attention spans of internet users (if a website has not fully loaded within twelve seconds, the average visitor leaves). In reality it is not. While there are ways to set up quickly and receive visitors to your website immediately, it is a costly option, which not everybody can afford. Additionally, your business model will be dependent on the continuous advertising expense, and it will stop functioning if you stop the (pay-per-click) advertising. Both forms of business demand some knowledge. Both forms of business require time to grow, or otherwise require additional expenses. The only difference is that you can start an internet business with less capital. However, what you save in money, you will need to invest in terms of time and commitment. At the end of the day, there is not that much difference between the two business models. Where the internet business model does have an advantage, though, is the fact that it can be expanded almost indefinitely. There are no physical restrictions like the size of the local population, and a physical location.
