How Major Life Changes Drive Us Towards Pension Transfers

Submitted by edparry

When life throws us a curveball, we adapt and try to move on. What separates humans, as a species, from others is their ability to adapt. Which is one of the reasons why our species are at the top of the food chain. We survive by adapting to change. Modern humans still experience change at a massive scale, whether it is global warming or a worldwide economic crisis that threaten to change the course of human history, we still manage to adapt and go on with our lives. Despite the seeming difficulties, we always find ways to get by.

At the macro level, individually, when we experience change, our first instinct is to protect ourselves. How so? By doing what is best for us to prepare for the future. Case in point, pension transfers. What do these transfers do? Generally speaking, transfers help us cope with major life changes to better benefit us in the future. When we experience a death in the family, existing pension plans may be rendered useless, so we take the option to transfer to secure our future. If someone switches jobs for better pay, a better lifestyle, he or she may opt to have his or her pension transferred to make sure their investment, and future, is secure. In other words, people adapt, no matter what the crisis. This is a clear example of our so-called "flight or fight" response. We are hardwired, as a species, to either flee or face any crisis that we may encounter. Another example is this, say you are a victim of circumstance and your savings are dwindling slowly due to the worldwide economic crisis. There are two ways you might respond to this, either you give it all up, losing all hope or run away -- or even worse -- if you are psychologically scarred, take your own life. This is an example of the flight response. If you choose to fight, then you pick yourself up, brush of the debris from your shoulders, and plan your actions carefully to secure your future. You think your savings are dwindling and your investments are eating away at your finances slowly? A pension transfer is one of the more logical steps to take to secure your future. This is the fight response.

Sometimes though, choosing to fight may not be the best option, and to flee may well be a viable course of action. Of course, I am not condoning the above "flight response" example, but rather, a different response altogether. Sometimes, a transfer of pension is not the best option. It all depends on the situation. Here is where specialists come in to assess your current lifestyle and financial situation to help you decide which course to take. There are instances when a transfer may aggravate your situation more, while staying with your current pension scheme is the best option you have.

Major changes are regular occurrences in one's life. What defines us is how we are able to adapt and move on despite the challenges we face.
