Age Matters to Car Insurance Companies

Submitted by Christine Barry

What is the reason for this? Car insurance companies believe that there drivers belonging to a particular age group are better risk drivers than the rest. Following this line of thought, companies believe that teenagers or young adults are bad risk drivers. The same is true for the age group at the extreme opposite end of the spectrum - the seniors. Bad risk drivers are, as the term implies, those who are deemed more likely to be involved in wrecks, crashes or accidents.

Good risk drivers, on the other hand, are those who are believed to be safer. This group's ages range from 40 to 50 years old. Such drivers are often given more discounts and can easily get insurance deals because, unlike young people, they are more mature and careful on the road. Seniors are mature, however they are deemed to be more prone to accidents due to slower reflexes and less keen eyesight than those in the 40-to-50 age group. In other words, those not belonging to the good risk drivers group are most likely to have more expensive rates.

So what must one do to have low cost auto insurance?

Companies still consider the reality that anyone is prone to being engaged in accidents, and so they often hold safe-driving seminars, refresher courses and the like. Should your company hold such workshops, it would be wise to attend these. Sure, you've been driving for some 40 plus years, but it wouldn't hurt to be refreshed on the various traffic rules and you would gain important knowledge as well. This would also increase you credibility to the company, hence increasing your possibility of getting discounts.

Teenagers could get low cost auto insurance through their class cards. Companies like good grades because it reflects the maturity and responsibility of the student. The catch for teenagers is to prove to the car insurance company that they are indeed responsible drivers, and they can do this by having and maintaining a clean driving record.

One very practical tip in acquiring cheap car insurance (and which also applies to all age groups) is to shop around and not stick to just one company. With the many companies around, you are bound to get insurance that is quality but not too expensive.

So while it is true that being 40 years old is more favorable to companies, it is not entirely impossible to get affordable insurance.
