Choosing One Insurance Agent Among the Many

Submitted by Anna Poelo
Fri, 5 Mar 2010

With money and insurance very important entities in our lives, it is only relevant that we know and trust the insurance agent that we choose. Many people may think that it does not matter where we buy our insurance. It does. We know how important it is just by knowing about the safety net that all kinds of insurances give us. Home insurance, life insurance, auto insurance, and more --- they all provide something like a financial safety net, and we should not take it lightly.

In deciding which insurance agent to choose among the many in your local area, it is first imperative to know the kinds of insurance agents there are. There isn't really any difference except as to how they operate. First, we have the captive agents. These are the agents who sell the insurance of only one company. Then there are the telephone representatives who sell the insurance of a company through the phone. Then there are the agents who tap the Internet. Consumers can search online for an insurance agent, fill out an application, and get and insurance quote. Lastly, there are the independent insurance agents. These agents represent many insurance companies and find consumers and do research through the help of the companies.

As stated above, the only difference is with how they operate. Putting that aside, all kinds of insurance agents just share one goal, and that is to satisfy the consumers and policyholders. As consumers, we also have one goal in choosing an insurance agent: to be financially safe with the insurance policies that they are offering. Whichever kind of insurance agent you choose, we should be certain that he or she can live up to the ideal qualities and work ethics we want an insurance agent to have, such as the following:

He or she has to be licensed and has lots of experience.
He or she has to have strong customer and community ties.
He or she has to provide competent service at great prices in accessing your insurance coverage.
He or she has to assist the policyholders when there are claims to be made.
He or she has to offer us, the consumers, choices of insurance plans and programs.
He or she has to look after the consumers by looking for the best combination of service and price and coverage.
He or she has to periodically look over a consumer or policyholder's plans and coverage in order to keep up with our changing insurance needs.
He or she has to treat consumers and policyholders like people and not just a number on their list.

One thing is for sure. No matter what kind of insurance agent he or she is, consumer satisfaction is at the the top of the list. It is part or their job, after all, to follow up on our policies and keep us satisfied with their services and plans. It is their job to sell these insurances and give us the best combination of service, price, and coverage. And we should make sure that our needs are met by the policies that we have agreed to in buying their insurance. This is what an agent should do, and what we should always keep in mind when choosing an insurance agent.
