Ensure your Dream Overseas Wedding Doesn't Turn into a Nightmare

Submitted by Josie Anderson

If your wedding is taking place abroad your standard wedding insurance cover should usually insure you against cancellation, loss or damage, as long as you have adequate travel insurance in place to cover the entire trip.

Standard wedding insurance will usually give your wedding the same level of protection, whether your wedding is in the UK or overseas. This means that your wedding cake, flowers, rings and the wedding attire should all be covered against theft, loss or damage. Remember that there will usually be criteria as to how these goods should be safely stored to ensure the claim is valid, and there may also be a time limit on the length of time the cake, gifts and clothes etc will be covered for.

Wedding insurance will protect you if you lose essential documents whilst abroad. For example, it may cover reasonable costs for travel, accommodation and fees you have to pay to reproduce lost documents essential to your wedding outside the United Kingdom. Whilst you should do everything you can to keep important certificates and identification safe, it is reassuring to know that your insurance will help if things go astray.

Do bear in mind that although your wedding will be covered by wedding insurance policy, your honeymoon will not: most insurance providers would recommend that you take out a separate travel insurance policy to be fully covered for your honeymoon, as wedding insurance only covers your wedding.

There can also be exceptions to your wedding insurance if your claims are a result of war risks, civil commotion or terrorism. Whilst a tropical or far flung location may sound exotic and relaxing for your wedding, it is always worthwhile investigating the political situation of your chosen destination to ensure there is no risk of civil unrest. The British Embassy will usually be able to advise you on these issues to make sure you have the most accurate information you require for your wedding.

If you are looking for wedding insurance in the UK or overseas, you should ensure that you discuss all the details of your big day with your provider so that you can concentrate on enjoying your time away.
