Financially Protect Your Windows from Accidental Damage

Submitted by Josie Anderson

Many people living in the UK compare home insurance policies online. Whilst this is a good way to find cheap home insurance, cost isn't everything. When selecting your provider it is worth bearing in mind that home insurance policies costing a little more often offer the most extensive contents cover.

The first thing to do when thinking about your home's windows is to make sure that the windows themselves are well fitted and of a decent quality. Poorly fitted windows can form stress cracks and they are also more likely to let in a draught. In fact, having well fitted, double-glazed windows can save you as much as £135 a year in energy savings.

Once you've ensured that your windows are of a high quality, you can start making the most of them. If your home is blessed with a beautiful view, why not build a window seat. Many models come with a hinged lid that allows you to store cushions or knickknacks beneath the seat. If you're feeling handy, you could also make a long cushion lined with a favourite fabric. This cushion feature, in addition to being beautiful, will be useful and comfortable as well.

Equally, if you spend a lot of time working from home, why not arrange your desk and chair so that you can look out over the landscape. A beautiful view can keep boredom at bay, refresh the mind and stop you from feeling stuck in doors. However, views that are too interesting can be counterproductive and you may find you spend all your time studying your neighbours rather than thinking about the task at hand.

Another way to make the most of your window is to hang a mobile. A design that includes reflective elements can bring more natural light into the room. Stained glass mobiles can also create an attractive play of light that draws people's attention towards the window and the view beyond.

Accidental breakage of windows should be covered by your home insurance, so once you've invested in these expensive items you should be financially protected. Some companies may even offer Unlimited Buildings Cover as standard, which would cover accidental damage to most mirrors and glass in your home.

Having made the most of your windows - and having taken out quality home insurance - you can sit back and enjoy the natural light flooding into your home.
