How to Save Money on Your Gas Bills

With the whole world currently in the grip of an economic crisis, people should ensure they are doing everything they can to save money in these troubled times. The first port of call should always be the home, where a lot of savings can be made. Utility bills are often a source of dismay, even for efficient users. So how can you save money on burgeoning gas bills?

Comparing gas rates with different suppliers is a good bet as there are numerous different factors that can make your gas bills cheaper. By being with the wrong supplier, you could be spending far more money than you need to. Switching gas suppliers can actually save you hundreds of pounds just by securing a better rate for the gas that you use.

The world of gas is very competitive and there will be many suppliers vying for your cash. To get the best deals you need to look at several factors when comparing: where you live has an effect on your rates, as does your actual usage, payment method and tariff.

First of all, if at all possible you should pay your gas bills via direct debit. Companies tend to charge extra for non-direct debit payments, so paying with direct debit can make you an instant saving. You can also save money by managing your account solely online. Paying for you gas online attracts additional discounts and it is much easier to manage your account with instant access to the relevant information and the ability to provide your own meter readings.

If you are using a pre-payment meter then you should definitely think about switching to a different method - Ofgem has stated that by doing so, you can save almost £170. Not only can switching your gas supplier work out cheaper, you may find other benefits such as better customer service, which can make a real difference when you need to speak directly with your supplier.

You may think switching gas suppliers would be an arduous task but it really isn't. Once you have chosen a new gas supplier, simply notify your current provider and then follow the instructions you get from your new gas company. Remember to clear any outstanding payments you may have with your current supplier. Within no time you should be happily receiving cheaper gas bills!
