Make An Information File For Future Health Insurance Reference

Submitted by chadisenberg

It is very common to have problems with health insurance claim. In fact, a joke is running around that if Benjamin Franklin is alive today, he would add health insurance problems to his famous quote "nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."

Dealing with health insurance claims is probably one of the most common problems with medical insurance. Some people tend to file claims too late because they are planning to file several claims at once. The problem with this is that medical insurance companies usually give them about a year to file a claim within a year after the treatment. If the person is too busy, he might forget that there is a timeframe for him or her to file the claim. That is why people should be on top of these things constantly and one thing that can help with filing health insurance claims is to have your own information file.

An information file is simply a series of questions with answers which you would need to use when filing claims.

The information file should also have your insurance company identification number. It is easier to write it down than trying to memorize it anyway. Your information file should first have the name, mailing address, and phone number of the insurer. Obviously, this is important especially if you are forgetful.

The information file should also have information whether the policy covers treatment of mental and emotional illnesses. You should also check if the company offers reimbursement for treatments done by a doctor or hospital not in their network. Another thing that should be there is what medical procedure needs pre-approval from the insurance company. It should also contain what preventive care, if any, is covered by the insurance. This should help you in picking out which preventive care that you have undergone you can file a claim for.

Then, also put down the individual yearly deductible or the family deductible if that's what you took out. Another data that should be on the information file is the yearly and lifetime maximums. If you have undergone a medical procedure that needs pre-approval without you filing for approval, chances are, your claim will be denied unless you have a very good reason.

You should also write down where you can find a list of medical providers accredited with the insurance company. Also write down what steps you can take to appeal a denied claim. These data should help you the next time you file a claim.
