Motorbike Helmets & Safety

Submitted by David Salt
Wed, 14 Oct 2009

Safety should always be kept in mind when riding a motorbike. You can take out motorbike insurance policies to protect yourself in the event of an accident. However, there are other ways to be proactive to protect yourself. Many accidents that occur involving motorbikes could be avoided if safety precautions were followed. Additionally, the severity of accidents can be significantly lessened by observing some safety practices. One of these practices would include wearing a helmet. Helmets provide your head with protection should an accident occur. If you do happen to become involved in an accident, merely wearing the motorbike helmet can decrease your chance for brain injury. Some statistics show that this chance of a head injury can be decreased to 15%. Motorbike rides that choose not to wear a motorbike helmet are three times more likely to have a brain injury should they be involved in a motorbike accident. Many of these accidents are actually fatal. Simply put, motorbike helmets save lives.

It should be noted that simply wearing a motorbike helmet won't provide you the maximum benefits if the motorbike helmet is not properly fitted to your head or properly constructed. It is advisable to try on a few motorbike helmets prior to purchase. After all, this step shouldn't be taken lightly. It may just save your life one day! You should make sure that the motorbike helmet does not impair your vision in any way. If it blocks you from seeing off to the side, then do not purchase it. By making sure you can see properly, this in itself can help you be a defensive driver and avoid accidents.

When making your motorbike helmet selection, also check to see what kind of material the motorbike helmet is constructed from. The stronger and more durable the material, the better protected you will be. Also, some advise purchasing a motorbike helmet that is made of a bright colour. Keeping visible to other motorists is a challenge for many motorbike drivers. A bright helmet will provide another vivid way that motorists can see you. Take the time to find the best helmet that will protect you the most.

Wearing safety gear when biking can sometimes not be enough, so make sure you take out motorcyle insurance from Carole Nash.
