Reasons for getting GAP insurance

Submitted by DavidMayer

All of us who have cars think of getting a newer car from time to time. These days there are different ways to make a new car purchase more affordable for those who really want it. From auto loans to special installment payments available at the dealer's, buying a new car has become much easier. Still, there are things beyond the purchasing process people usually forget about.

One of these things is of course auto insurance, which the drivers are obliged to carry no matter what. And most car owners are looking for ways to cut down their insurance costs and get the coverage they need for the least amount of money. A lot of car owners assume that they won't need all those coverage types because they won't ever end up in an accident and usually strip down the policy to bare essentials.

However, one important thing most drivers tend to forget about is that accidents happen quite often and you can't predict whether you will end up in one or not, regardless how of a good driver you are. Don't forget that you're not the only one on the road and you can never be sure in other traffic participants. And when you have an accident the amount of coverage carried by your policy becomes very important.

What many car owners don't realize is that their cars' value diminishes at a very fast rate. The moment you take the car from the dealer's and take it for its first real spin, its value instantly drops by 20-30%. And if you have an accident after just purchasing your new car, even with full coverage you'll get only 70-80% of the price you actually paid for it. In case your car gets totaled this means that you will have to add a hefty sum of money out of own pocket in order to buy the very same car even after getting the coverage from auto insurance.

That's when GAP insurance is really needed. GAP stands for Guaranteed Auto Protection, and what it does is that it covers the difference between the purchase value and the actual dropped value of the car if the coverage is not enough to pay for replacing the car in its entirety. Gap is a relatively cheap type of insurance coverage and will particularly appeal to those looking forward to buying a new and modern vehicle.

Most insurance companies provide this form of coverage and you can simply include it when comparing auto insurance quotes. However, you should first contact your current insurance provider and the dealer you want to buy the new car from, in order to specify the actual amount of coverage you will need for the GAP coverage to carry. The car dealer can actually provide GAP insurance as part of the insurance package they can offer with the car itself. And even if they don't you can buy it separately when looking for auto insurance quotes. Even most online quote comparison sites offer the possibility to see how much GAP insurance will cost according to different variables. So, just as you did with auto insurance quotes when getting your policy, the same applies to GAP insurance too.
