Switching Your Car Insurance To Your New Vehicle

Submitted by dannyaaron

When you purchase a new motor vehicle, you will obviously need to insure it. Cars cost a lot of money, and you do not want to be without a motor vehicle or the money you spent on one if you have a collision.

When selling their old car and getting behind the wheel of their new one, most people forget to immediately change their auto insurance details. This is something that should be handled before you even get behind the wheel of your new car. You must ensure that your car is ensured before you even drive it for the first time. If you were already driving another car, which you are now selling, you need to transfer your motor insurance to your new vehicle. There may be some hiccups involved in this though, as the insurance clauses could be different for your new vehicle.

The first thing you need to do is to contact your motor insurance company. Inform them that you have decided to purchase a new vehicle. Remember that the insurance premium on your new vehicle might be very different depending on the vehicle you have purchased. The more expensive your vehicle is, the more it will cost to insure. It will also be more expensive to insure if the parts for your new vehicle are not as readily sourced as your old one. The security measures on your new vehicle could be different to your old one. These are all reasons why it is imperative that you inform your insurance company of the change. Bear in mind that the old policy is assigned to the specific car you were driving, not you as a person, so your new car will NOT be covered.

When you change the policy from your old motor vehicle to your new one, you may take this as an opportunity to review your policy and coverage. Perhaps you would like more cover for your new car, as opposed to your old one. You could be pleasantly surprised to find that your new vehicle awards you a lower insurance premium. This could be due to the car being less of a theft risk than your old vehicle, having more in built security or just having cheaper parts.

When you contact your motor insurance company, ensure that you have received all necessary documentation for the change of your policy. Read over everything carefully, so that you understand the coverage you are paying for. If there is anything else you would like, then you need to speak to your insurance broker. It is best to ensure that your coverage is in effect from the moment you sit down behind the wheel of your new car. You also need to make sure that you cancel the policy on your old vehicle, before you sell it or trade it in.

It is vital that you change over your policy details, as your new motor vehicle will not be covered by your old policy in the event of an accident!
