Things You Should Know About Temporary Health InsuranceSubmitted by chadisenberg Fri, 7 Aug 2009
If you have been looking for a health insurance policy, chances are, you might have heard of short term and temporary health insurance. As its name suggests this policy lasts for a short period of time, specifically from 6 to 12 months. There are even shorter policies you can find in the market which could run up to as short as 30 days.
Usually, it is just like any long term policy in the sense that you will get the insurance card and you will also get the deductible and the typical limits on the services once you sign up for it. The major difference of course is the length of time that the policy will be made available to you. Also, there are differences when it comes to limitations. Just like in long-term health insurance policies, short-term ones will not cover pre-existing conditions. So if you have been diagnosed with a medical condition before applying for a short-term or temporary insurance policy, it could not be used to cover costs that may arise from medication of your pre-existing medical condition. Furthermore, this type of plan cannot be used for preventive care like physical examinations. On the other hand, it can be used for a serious health condition one might have after signing up for the policy. Upon signing up for this type of plan, keep in mind that you will lose eligibility for the guaranteed insurance coverage. Guaranteed insurance coverage means that you are covered whatever the state of your health is. This means that if you are getting an insurance policy so that you need not worry about your health or the cost of medication, this type of policy might not be the best available option for you. There are some positives about this type of insurance too. After all, it would not be available if it does not have any advantages for policy holders. Although it is clear that it is not for everyone there are some groups of people who can take advantage of the policy's coverage. Students and those in-between jobs can take advantage of the flexibility offered by this type of insurance policy. This plan is also better for the person waiting to be covered by a group insurance plan and wants some form of coverage in the interim. Also, people in good health can take out this policy which could be cheaper albeit risky as they could develop a serious medical condition afterwards and not be covered long-term.
