Tips to help you save on and get an affordable health insuranceSubmitted by chadisenberg Thu, 28 May 2009
Your health insurance is one of those policies that you need to face sooner or later. Whether you like it or not, you will have to get this so that your health and your future can be backed by safer hands. Though having this kind of policy will cost you your hard-earned money, you need to remember that this is one kind of investment that you should not miss. So when you are at that stage when you need to shop for an insurance for you or for your family, then the first thing that you need to remember is that the policies from leading names in the industry like the ones from Blue Cross insurance will often give better results, say compared to new entries in the market. At least with the old hands in the market, you have a reputation and a history that you can always check and verify.
Prioritizing the established providers in the market should serve as your first step in looking on ways on how to save on your health insurance. There are a number of other tips out there, and we list some of these important tips and strategies. A no-brainer suggestion is to get the one that is offered at the best price. If you are healthy and you are under 50 then there is a bigger chance that insurers can give you a better rate. But for older people and those with existing medical problems, finding the right provider of policy and at a better insurance quote and price will be hard. If your partner is working too and has insurance from a different insurance provider, then you have better chances of paying less as compared to the one-income couples. The best deal that you can get will still depend on the premiums and the benefits of each plan. You can either go for separate coverage, get double coverage for the both of you or you can cancel the coverage of your partner in favor of the other. You can also save on your family insurance by taking advantage of available tax breaks. If for example you have a business of your own, then you can deduct the 100 percent of the premium from the gross income. Ask your employer if they offer the flexible spending account, and if they have one then better sign up. You can also cut the premium that you will have to pay by getting the so-called ‘catastrophic' coverage. This can offer a high deductible, as high as $2,500. Also don't fall into the trap of reducing the premium that you will have to pay by reducing the coverage. And finally, when you are on a lookout for a cheap health insurance then you need to understand what the subsidy can give you. You're a shoo-in for subsidy if your income is low; you are disabled and if you're health-related expenses are too high. Plus if you have lost your jobs, there might be some laws that can give you rights to coverage. The key here is to do your research, and as much as possible do ask around and ask for opinions before jumping into the first online quote that is offered to you.
