Wedding Insurance and Vintage Dresses

Submitted by Josie Anderson

Your wedding insurance should pay for loss or damage to ceremonial and bridal attire belonging to, or hired by you or a close relative prior to, during and after your wedding ceremony. This means that a vintage dress as well as a new dress will usually be covered.

Why vintage?

There are a lot of advantages to choosing a vintage frock, as you can pick a style from an era that suits your personality as well as your figure. For example, dresses from the thirties and forties have a classic elegance, whilst shorter fifties style dresses have a fun-loving look and set a more relaxed tone for your big day.

Another advantage of buying a vintage dress is the cost. Wedding dresses are notoriously expensive; in fact the average amount each UK bride spends on her dress is £1,200.[1] If you long for a dress made from expensive natural fibres, embellished with beadwork, or expertly embroidered by hand, you may be shocked by how much this craftsmanship costs on a new dress. However, if you opt for a vintage dress, you may be able to find these styles within your price range.

If you're tempted by the idea of a vintage wedding dress, there are a few things to bear in mind in addition to the wedding dress insurance you will take out. Over the last sixty years, the shape of women's bodies has changed considerably so if you fall in love with a classic dress you will almost certainly have to make some alterations to it. You may want to consult a dressmaker to get an idea of what can and can't be altered.

There are plenty of imitation vintage garments on the market so check any prospective dresses carefully. Brand new labels are the most obvious sign of an imitation garment, but some manufacturers even sew old labels into new dresses - so be sure to examine dresses carefully before making a purchase.

Whatever style you settle on, reputable wedding insurance should protect you financially in case anything happens to your dress, whilst the timeless grace of classic dress adds charm and authenticity to your big day.
