Wedding Insurance - Bridal Garters

Submitted by Josie Anderson
Thu, 24 Mar 2011

Wedding insurance providers usually cover the bride's clothing and accessories, whether they are owned or hired, within their policy. If your bridal attire is lost or damaged for a specified amount of time prior to, for the duration and after the commencement of the wedding, then most wedding insurance providers should protect you financially. You'll need to check your policy for the exact limits, as it varies between providers.

The tradition of the bridal garter dates back centuries. It was believed that taking an article of the bride's clothing would bring good luck, but in rowdy circles this custom could lead to the wedding dress being damaged. In order to prevent this, a couple of new traditions arose: the tossing of the garter and the throwing of the bouquet.

The groom was afforded the privilege of removing the garter and would then toss it to the male guests, just as the bride still throws the bouquet to her female guests. It was said that the two guests who caught the bouquet and the garter would be the next to marry. Not only that, these two would traditionally share a dance during the evenings' celebrations.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the popularity of garters: In 2007, £1,454,000 of garters, suspenders and similar items were sold in the UK. Perhaps this is partly because garters are both private and playful; as your garter usually won't be seen by your guests, you can use it to add a personal touch to your wedding day. For example, if the groom is a big football fan, why not show your support and get a garter made up in his team colours.

If your husband-to-be isn't a sports enthusiast, you can still find ways to personalise this item. Embroiderers are happy to customise most fabrics, so you can decorate your garter with a personal message to your sweetheart. Garters can also provide an ideal solution if you are having difficulty incorporating ‘something blue' into your ensemble. Many of the designs available feature a blue ribbon or a small blue fabric rose for this very reason.

Wedding insurance providers should protect you financially from loss or damage to all items of your bridal attire, and a reputable wedding insurance policy can help relieve some of the anxiety you may feel in the lead up to your big day. With the peace of mind that this brings, you can turn your attention to enjoyable details and personal touches such as the garter.
