Why Get Life InsuranceSubmitted by stefanieheagy01 Tue, 29 Sep 2009
Many people don't fully understand the concept of life insurance, and fail to grasp the notion of getting money after they die. This lack of certainty is definitely understandable however and as many point out: what use will you have for money after you die? Well while this is certainly the case in some situations and for some individuals, for others it's possible one of the most important types of insurance you can get. Unlike most forms of insurance you see, life insurance not aimed at benefiting you but is instead aimed at supporting your family should you no longer be around to help them.
If you are a parent or a spouse and are currently the breadwinner in your household, then a loss of your regular income is likely to effect the family in a big way. Obviously the real tragedy in this scenario will be your passing, but with that tragedy still fresh in their minds then the last thing your family need is a massive financial upheaval as well. The loss of a regular income for a single parent can be devastating and without life insurance your spouse may end up having to look after children on their own while trying to hold down a job. While most governments have in place some form of benefit for widows and widowers, this will almost certainly not be enough for your family to maintain the standard of living they will have enjoyed while you were alive. This may well mean that your partner will have to hire a Nanny or babysitter a lot of the time while they work meaning that your children will lose the presence of two parental figures in their lives for much of the time. At the same time it's unlikely that a partner will be able to hold down a full time job on their own and so are likely to have to take something part time, or at least lower paying while they work their way up to the kind of position you only achieve with time. This will likely mean selling the house and downsizing, pulling your children out of school and moving them to a new location away from all their friends and local haunts at the worst possible time. To help with the financial strain of the situation, widows and widowers without life insurance will often end up taking out loans and getting themselves into debt making the whole nightmare even worse than it has to be. So who should look into getting life insurance? Well as a general rule, anyone who currently supports one or more members of their family needs to get life insurance to make sure they can continue to do so post-mortem. Even if you are not the breadwinner in your family - if you currently look after children and have money to get insured then you should do to make sure your partner can be there for your children when they most need to be. If you are already a single parent then it's even more crucial that you look into insurance. Life insurance is one of the most important gifts you will ever give your family.
