Young drivers can get better rates too

Submitted by DavidMayer

When discussing the age groups in terms of insuring one's car, most customers tend to note that teens usually get far higher rates than older drivers. And while this may seem unfair to the inexperienced young car owners, insurance companies have their own reasons to give this age group higher insurance quotes than to other drivers. Those younger than 25 are statistically more prone to having serious car accidents and filing claims more often than their older peers. And while there are certainly many exceptions, the trait of driving aggressively younger drivers are infamous for makes the insurance companies act respectively.

But what if you're not a reckless young driver that doesn't respect the rules? Is there anything you can do to get cheaper car insurance? Fortunately, there are certain tips you can follow in order to get your rates down. Some will be more effective than the others when you start applying them, but if combining these tips you'll certainly have a good cut in your rates that'll allow saving some money. Here's what you can to do get better rates:

First of all, look at the car you're driving. If your parents had the guts and money for buying you a nice sports car or new sedan for your 18'th birthday it definitely means that you have great parents. And this also means that your rates will always be higher. For your first car the best choice would be a used vehicle or a cheaper small ride that will allow accumulating the necessary driving experience without putting a burden of costly auto insurance on your shoulders. Sure, the temptation to show off will be enormous, but if you're looking for a way to save money this is what you should start with.

Next, if you're a good student at high school or college - provide proof of this to the insurance company and you will get a good discount. Your average should be B and higher and you'll have to provide copies of your grade reports every year. But a little paperwork sure pays off when it comes to having your car covered for a lower price.

Defensive driving courses are also a good way to cut a slice from your premiums. Having a certificate after finishing such courses will make a good impression on any insurance provider no matter how old you are, so make sure to visit such courses if there are any in your area.

And of course, don't forget about shopping around. These days it's much easier because there's the Internet and there are many sites offering you free online quote comparison tools. While this may seem complicated for your parents to do things they are used to doing through an agent, you'll certainly have no problems comparing quotes online and finding a suitable policy for you car. This can especially prove helpful if all other saving tips do not apply in your case. Comparison shopping is open for everyone and investing some time into it can result in very attractive rates for a young driver. So make sure to get as many car insurance quotes as you can and running them through a thorough comparison.
