A Frugal Valentine's Day

Submitted by cbelden

Valentine's Day is February 14 and for most consumers, the holiday is an all but mandatory opportunity to display your appreciation for loved ones. Commercials emphasizing precious gems, roses, gold, and other expensive tokens of affection can make Valentine's more stressful than necessary for those on a budget. Sometimes, it can even seem like less costly gifts and actions are indicative of less concern, which is often not the case.

Is it possible to give a sincere Valentine's Day gift without breaking the bank? Absolutely. In this article, we'll make three budget-savvy suggestions for ways you and yours can make this Valentine's Day special without having to dip into your life savings.

Enjoy Candlelight
Utility bills are some of the highest consumers pay for each month, so take Valentine's as an excuse to cut back on the power. Light several candles and turn off all your lights and electronics for a home-cooked meal, glass of wine, or just some intimate cuddle time. Make sure the candles are safe in cups or on plates and away from any dangling curtains or tassels that might catch fire. Also, be sure to remember to blow them out before you go to sleep.

Choose Fruit
Chocolate is a staple of Valentine's Day—and also one of the most expensive, especially if you're looking for the best quality. However, many kinds of fruit can have the same pleasing effects of quality chocolate, while costing much less. Do a little research, check online for varieties of fruit that are known for having satisfying properties, and if you're feeling adventurous, melt some inexpensive chocolate chips for sweet dipping.

Create a Homemade Spa
Professional spa visits can cost hundreds of dollars. This year, create the same relaxing atmosphere at home for less. Many dollar stores or discount retailers sell simply fragranced salts, bubble baths, and lotions, often bundled together in baskets or kits. Turn down the lights, turn on your local classical radio station or find some peaceful free Internet radio, and share some quiet intimate time massaging your partner.
