What are Payday Loans and How Can They Help Me?

Payday loans are a relatively new concept in the UK, having been started in the USA. In essence, they are a ‘stop-gap' loan, offering the chance for someone to cover expenses that might not fall in line with the pattern of their income. However, it is worth remembering that a payday loan is a short-term loan for short-term situations; if they are viewed in any other way, they could incur debt rather than allay it, as their interest rates are relatively high.

These cash-advances are generally for suns between £100 and £1000, reflecting the ability of the applicant to make the repayment on time. The loan itself is generally made for around 1 month or 31 days and requires few criteria to make an applicant eligible. Unlike standard loans, you do not have to be a homeowner or necessarily have a good credit rating. What you do need to have is a job that pays a regular wage, an active bank or building society account and a debit card that is affiliated to that account.

If you have these ingredients, you can apply for a payday loan online and it is very common to be offered a loan on the same day. Unlike standard loans, the information you have to disclose is relatively minimal and you shouldn't have to give any details of your circumstances; all a lender really needs to see is that you receive a regular wage and it is this that will cover the loan. Some lenders like you to give them a post-dated cheque for the full amount of the loan and its interest; this will be cashed on the day that the loan-term ends.

Payday loans can be used for a variety of reasons, but are at their most effective when used as a method of preventing further debt. Homeowners often use them as a buffer in the event that it looks likely that they might have to default on a mortgage payment. Those who have incurred a sudden and unexpected expense can use the money to prevent incurring overdraft fees when going overdrawn without permission, or defaulting on current account payments.

Because you don't need to be a homeowner in order to qualify, payday loans are also of great benefit to tenants who don't want to fall behind on rental payments or simply have an unexpected bill that needs paying. Unexpected bills can often put a hole in a family's or individual's finances; dental bills, domestic bills and motor repairs are all valid reasons to take out a payday loan.

Payday loans can be preferable to asking friends or family for money and the process can be a lot quicker than applying for a standard loan - a great benefit if there is a pressing expense that needs paying in short order. The borrowing does not impact on your credit score, although many lenders require a credit check before they will grant a payday loan. Used as a safety net between pay-cheques, payday loans can provide a great method of debt-prevention.
