Why Should You Start the Home Loan Modification Process Today?

Submitted by John Caroll
Fri, 6 Mar 2009

There are so many homeowners in the country today who are in urgent need of a home loan modification to keep from missing a mortgage payment or even to save them from foreclosure. But it is quite surprising that even though a lot of homeowners know that they need to start on their loan modification applications, they seem to be reluctant or waiting for something.

Of course it is understandable to a certain extent as a lot of homeowners have no clue on how to go about preparing for a loan modification application. They also have no idea of the paperwork involved, the documents required and how to prepare the application so that they make a strong case for getting their home loans approved for modification.

Another reason homeowners put off their loan modification applications is lack of knowledge. Many feel that since they have already defaulted on their monthly mortgage, there is no chance for them to get a loan modification approval and hence they do not go through with their applications. First of all this is a complete myth. You can always get your mortgage plan modified even if you have defaulted in the past. If you have a genuine problem paying your mortgage, then the banks will take that into consideration and present a modified plan which could ease your mortgage burden. Even if homeowners are not late on their mortgage but are experiencing tremendous hardship in staying current, they are also a candidate for modification.

Whatever may be your situation, the fact is that you need to start on your home loan modification process right now. If you do not know how to go about it, research online or contact a home loan modification consultant. But you really need to act now as the longer you wait, the more time it will take to get your application approved by the banks.

Homeowners must remember that they are not alone. Millions of families across the United States are in the same boat and are rushing to the lenders to get their mortgage loans modified. Banks get literally thousands of applications every week and with every passing day, the line is getting longer to get applications reviewed and ultimately approved. Depending on the circumstances, it takes about 6-8 weeks at least to get a home loan reviewed for modification but with the rush, it can take over 12 weeks to know the status of your application.

In those 12 weeks, anything could happen. You could lose your job, you could meet with an accident or due to some unforeseen situation your monthly household expenses could increase by a considerable margin. This will affect your chances for a modification and will ultimately determine whether you qualify for a loan modification or not. Even if you do qualify, the monthly payments and interest rates would also depend on your current situation. Hence, the more you wait; the risk of a loan modification application being rejected goes up.

There is seriously no good reason whatsoever to wait to at least submit a home loan modification application. Homeowners have nothing to lose. The worst thing your lender can do is say no. If you have true hardship and you work with a modification consultant, the chances of a modification application being improved increase greatly. The best time is right now. You must act immediately if you are serious about improving your situation, saving your home, and building a secure life for you and your family.
