Consequences of Maintaining Underwater Mortgages on the EconomySubmitted by izibir Mon, 8 Nov 2010
Moral high ground and being a good borrower aside how does keeping underwater mortgages benefit anyone? Americans who are paying underwater mortgages are who the economy wants for spending. They have high incomes to keep up with the underwater mortgage at a much higher interest rate. Nonetheless they will not have any more money for spending for themselves or their home at this rate. They will not be in a favorable attitude to consume either.
They could not surely consider costly holidays, meals or shopping sprees when they owe twice larger than what is their home worth. After all would they be well off than they are now? Perhaps majority of those homeowners were awaiting for a rapid recovery until now. However the economy clearly is in life support and requires the second quantitative easing. Unlikely it can save anybody from their troubles at the moment. Based on statistics homeowners in intentional default exhibit the relief and could go out and entertain themselves in the shopping malls and restaurants whilst the ones that keep the mortgage have to keep up with payments each month. How far would this last till these consumers get the picture that their works for being considerate debtors will not reward for a few years and their present home loan lender will not sympathize it in any shape? If it is about being a considerate citizen, how wasting money on painfully underwater home help anyone? Maybe accepting their losses at once will assist everyone and the country. It might be time to get a new beginning. It seems that rents have fallen down very much ,too. They would be much well off every month if they were to stop keeping up with their mortgages. It would be a material loss for mortgage market, but with a reputation they maintain just now not many people would care much.
