Over $700 million dollars has been reserved particularly for these grants. The aim of the new grant money is to encourage students to pursue a major in the technology, mathematics, and science fields. College students may be awarded the National Smart Grant if:

They are qualified to receive a Pell Grant. (College students who receive the National Smart Grant may also get the Pell Grant to go towards tuition expenses.).

They are a U.S. citizen.

They maintained a cumulative 3.0 grade point.

They plan to graduate with a degree in math, engineering, technology, science, or a foreign language.

The Academic Competitiveness Grant is given to first and second year college students. Freshman students could be awarded up to $750 toward their tuition costs and eligible second year students could be awarded up to $1300. Below we have listed the requirements for the Academic Competitiveness Grant.

Students are eligible to receive the Academic Competitiveness Grant if:

They're enlisted full-time as a first or second year college student in a 2-4 year program.

They are eligible to receive the Pell Grant. (College students who are given the Academic Competitiveness Grant can also apply the Pell Grant to help with their tuition fees.).

They have finished a strenuous plan of study in high school according to national education guidelines.

They earned a 3.0 GPA during the first year of college. (This applies to sophomores)

They are a United States citizen.

They graduated from high school no sooner than January 1, 2006 for freshmen students and January 1, 2005 for second year students.

If college students aren't eligible for the National Smart Grant or the Academic Competitiveness Grant, there are various other college government grants out there.
