Obama Wants Overworked and Single Mothers to Go Back to School - Additional Scholarships and Grants to Help

Mothers across the United States are taking advantage of President Obama's Scholarship for Mothers Program. With his dedication to expanding the educational opportunities available to low income families, Obama has passed a bill that will help mothers across the country to return to college and attain a higher level of education.

The program increases the amount of money available to mothers through the Federal Pell Grant. The original $4000 in grant money has been increased to a maximum of $5100, enabling these women to cover the extended costs that mothers incur when pursuing a college degree.

In addition to the typical college expenses faced by most students, mothers have the added burden of supporting their children while attending school. In addition to paying for their basic necessities, mothers also have to generate additional funds to pay for childcare. Because of their lack of a higher education, these women are generally in low paying jobs that barely provide them with enough income to raise a family. Prior to Obama's new plan, returning to school was not an option for the majority of these women.

The increase in Pell Grant Funds allows mothers to cover the expenses associated with attending college, including tuition, textbooks, administrative fees, general school supplies, a computer and software, transportation and child care.

The variety of schooling options also makes this plan desirable to many mothers. After working 40+ hours per week and then coming home to care for the demanding needs of a family, it is difficult for many mothers to find the time and energy to attend a physical classroom. By offering alternatives to the traditional classroom setting, such as Saturday-only courses and online classes, the program provides an appealing scenario that makes raising a family while working and going to school an achievable feat.
