Personal Student DebtSubmitted by echo_promotions Thu, 31 Jan 2008
Nearly all college students must face debt sometime during their education. However, this doesn't mean that we should not do whatever we can to avoid debt. This article gives a couple tips on avoiding student loans, paying off student loans if you already have them, and great money saving habits.
Alternatives to Loans: The best alternative to getting a student loan is to get a scholarship or grant. Scholarships can be found if you just look for them and are awarded for many different reasons. You can find scholarships at the university you wish to attend, at local businesses and organizations, and online. A few businesses and organizations which provide scholarships are Chamber of Commerce, Junior League, Girls & Boys Club, and certain Retail Stores. Some great internet sites that will find scholarships specifically for you are FastWeb.com, Scholarships.com, and FreeScholarshipGuide.com. Grants can be found at fafsa.ed.gov. One other way to avoid student loans is to use your skills to find a high paying job. Consider your talents and skills to find a job that's right for you. How to Pay Off Loans: If repaying your student loans as painlessly as possible is your goal, consider the following recommendations. It might be difficult for the first little while, but soon a good habit will form and it will become simple and easy: -Lock in a Low Rate: It takes time to find a low rate but it will save you a lot of money in the long run. -Pay Through School: If your loan does not require you to pay while you are in school, do it anyway. Even a small monthly payment will save you a good deal of money. -Don't Miss Payments: Bad habits are easy to form and hard to break. Don't get into the habit of missing payments. -Pay More than the Minimum: If you pay more than the required amount you'll be out of debt much faster. Save Money The majority of debt difficulties are caused by the complacent way we spend our money. Innumerable amounts of students just scrape by regardless of how much or how little money they're making. They do this because they have created bad spending habits. A great way to break these habits is to form new ones. Try looking for sales, buying from discount stores, eating out less frequently, and attending matinees instead of evening movies. Certain movie theatres give discount tickets people with student ID's. If you can, share an apartment with many people. Think about living without a vehicle and ride a bike or walk instead. This will save you lots of gas money. Whenever you go shopping always ask the question "Do I really need it?" before you put any item into your cart and never go grocery shopping if you are hungry. Do not end up cheating your future self by racking up a bunch of debt in your college years. Listen to the recommendations in this article and you'll graduate college with little or no debt. You'll be thankful you did! NOTE: Use of this article requires links to be intact. About the Author
