5 Things You Need to Know About Home Insurance

Submitted by edparry

Home insurance and homeowners insurance mean the same thing. Both provide financial protection in the event of disasters. Standard homeowners insurance insures the structure itself as well as the things inside it; much like a building and contents insurance. Insurance is basically a package policy. As such, it covers several aspects of the property being insured. Here are 5 things that you need to know about homeowners insurance.

1. Being a package policy, it insures the structure of the property itself – your home. But more than that, it also covers incurred legal liabilities and responsibilities towards another person's property as well as injuries inflicted towards another person as a result of the damaged property. It even includes costs of damages inflicted towards household pets.

Although it mostly covers damages incurred from natural disasters, the insurance policy still has its limitations. Typically, damages caused by fire, lighting, hail, hurricane, and disasters enumerated in the policy are covered, except for damages caused by earthquakes, floods, and the natural wear and tear of materials. If you would like that most damages will be covered, you may purchase a number of insurance policies, such as separate insurance coverage for flood and earthquake.

2. The policy also covers your home furnishings as well as your personal belongings. But you must not think that the value of your personal belongings will be the same as the value of your house or property structure. If you have priceless personal items and expensive decors and furniture, it is advisable that you purchase a separate insurance for those valuable items.

3. Avoid tie-ins and bundling. If you really want to save a significant amount, this is not the way to do it. Instead, it would be better if you fill up numerous applications by personally visiting a company or filling-up online applications. This way, you will be able to thoroughly compare prices as well as insurance coverage. With the internet, there is not even a need for you to personally visit insurance companies for a quote, because the technology allows you to conveniently shop around right at the comfort of your own home.

4. Never underinsure nor overinsure. If you want to get the most out of the money you spent for Home insurance, all you need to do is purchase the type of insurance coverage that you need. To be able to do this, you have to make a list and write down all the things that needs to be insured or you want to have insured. The list allows you to meticulously keep track of all your valuables, helping you identify the type of insurance that you must purchase.

5. Ask for a House Rebuilding Costs booklet from the Association of British Insurers. This is a useful booklet that guides and gives you pertinent information about Home Insurance, particularly Building and Contents Insurance. You may even ask your insurer to furnish you a copy of this booklet for your reference.

One can never tell what will happen the next day, much more the future; thus, it is always good to be prepared and invest on insurance policies wisely.

Home insurance and homeowners insurance mean the same thing. Both provide financial protection in the event of disasters.
